School governance

The Schools Team offers advice and guidance on a wide range of issues specific to the governance of Church of England Schools. The appointment of all foundation governors is undertaken via the Diocese and we offer training to all church school governors, often in conjunction with our local authority partners.

Our Guide for Foundation Governors in Church of England Schools is sent to new or reappointed foundation governors. Please refer to 'Responding to Change' for information regarding Extended Services. This document may be updated from time to time, and you can always keep up to date with current information via this website.

All governors or aspiring governors should be familiar with the Guide to the Law and our School Admissions Guidance for New Governors.  General advice on school governance is available from your local authority's Governor Services Team and from Governor Line ph: 08000 722 181.

Members of our team regularly contribute articles to local authority governor magazines highlighting issues of particular relevance to church school governors.

Your Instrument of Government

The Instrument of Government is one of the legal documents governing your school. It has a statutory content which sets out the name of the school and its governing body, the constitution of the governing body, including those responsible for the nomination and appointment of different categories of governor, and the ethos statement underpinning the school’s governance.

The size (between 9 and 20) and make up of your governing body varies depending on the category of school (VC, VA, Community, Trust or Foundation) and what is appropriate for each school. This is guided by the Education School Governance Introduction.
